Songs in the Night

Yet the LORD will command his loving kindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.” Psalm 42:8

On a previous post I shared with you my accident. As a result of the accident, I had to undergo surgery on my leg to reattach the quad tendon to my knee. Since the surgery I have been unable to focus on anything for more than a few seconds, the pain medicine made me nauseous and most of my time has been spent sleeping.

Last night everything came to head. Unable to sleep, find a comfortable place to lie and very edgy, I fell apart. After hours of twisting and turning, I decided to put the TV on hoping that by focusing on something else would settle me down. Well it didn’t work and my anxiousness was growing by the second. At wits end I did what I should have done long before – pray for help. The Lord answered my prayer with “songs in the night.”

Still jumping from channel to channel with nothing but banal program content, I continued to channel surf. I came across a station playing worship music. Various Psalms had been set to music and as the music played, the words of the Psalms were inscribed over some of the most beautiful scenery.

As I began to listen to the music and read the words of the Psalms, I started to settle down and the next thing I knew it was morning. YES God has promised that “in the night his songs shall be with me.” As the day has progressed, I am reminded of a time 18 years ago when pain was my companion. I could not sleep or find a comfortable position. It was then, as last night, that the Lord also gave me “songs in the night.” I would lay on the floor with the radio on listening to a Christian radio station play a variety of God-centered music and find myself quieted down and would fall asleep finding relief from my pain.

God provides comfort in many ways and in the night He gives us His song. When your night seasons come, allow God’s Word to be your comfort. One of the Psalms set to music contained these words: “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.” [Psalm 62:4 – 6]

I hope you will find comfort in your night season through “His songs.”
